Flight travel deals are out there, but not many travel industry insiders are offering them up, without you first asking about them. So, if you want to get the best flight travel deals, you are going to have to do some research on your own. This article will go a long way toward helping get you started in that direction. The following basic tips are available to anyone (i.e., they don’t require “insider connections” to achieve good results).

1) Book in advance. So basic and well known, I almost feel guilty offering it as a tip. Nonetheless, it can save you big money. Reserve your flight a month in advance, optimize your discount. Reserve your flight the week before, expect to pay premium prices.

2) Don’t fly during regular business hours. Airline flight is a supply-and-demand business. If you insist on flying between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. - when available seats are at their minimum - then plan on paying higher prices. Flying “the red-eye” - when LOTS of seats are available - can greatly lower the cost of your ticket.

3) Check the prices for flying out of/into an alternate airport. Sometimes, you’ll get a better deal by driving to a larger, metropolitan area, rather than insisting on a flight departing from your local “community” airport. On the other hand, Los Angelenos, for example, know that driving to one of the smaller airports - NOT known as LAX - can save them mucho dinero.

4) Ask the airline to adjust the price of your ticket to reflect the current price they are charging - IF, that is, prices have gone down since you booked your ticket. Few people do this - or even KNOW about this - but the airlines will adjust the price if you ask them to. Just don’t expect them to do it without your prompting them first.

5) Don’t park your car at the airport, if possible. Parking fees amass quickly - and might even offset all of the savings you managed to get through your other money-saving efforts. I once took a trip to Hawaii when I was fresh out of high-school (about 30 years ago…gulp!), and upon returning to Denver after two weeks, the cost of parking the car for all of that time came to over $100, leaving the four of us who went on the trip arriving home with nothing but coins in our pockets and fumes in the gas tank by the time we completed our 300-mile car ride home from the airport. Obviously, not parking at the airport isn’t always an option. So, at the very least, consider the cost of parking your car in your budgeting plans.

6) Try to fly “off-season.” Granted, flying to Hawaii for the Christmas holiday sounds very appealing when your home is under several feet of snow, but flying there in the summer can be much cheaper. I, for one, found Hawaii in July to be very enjoyable - especially with that extra cash for Mai-Tais on the beach.

7) Check into package deals. Sometimes you can save a lot of money by purchasing a package deal, where you buy your flight, your motel room, and possibly even a rental car all in one “package deal.” You might even get some extras thrown in, like a luau (in Hawaii), or a Broadway show (in New York City).

8) Bulk discounts. Sometimes organizations or communities arrange trips for their members, saving each individual some cash in the deal. Senior communities commonly do this with trips to Las Vegas, for example.

9) Check with the aggregators. These outfits - aggregators - will compare multiple airlines and travel agencies, at once - finding you the best deal from all the places they dig around into. Of course, an aggregator can’t possibly check ALL travel outlets, so try a few aggregators, and then try going directly through the airline that the aggregators deemed cheapest. You may find that the “going direct” to the airline of your choosing might reap better discounts for you, through frequent-flier programs, and such - not to mention allowing you to bypass the travel agency fees (minimal though they are).

Look at the features: Yes, pet carriers also have features. You can get one that goes over your shoulder, or you can get one that wheels around. I find the ones on wheels to be the best, because it’s a lot easier to tote them around in the airport. I’m sure you will feel the same way as well.

Price - The last thing on my list is the price. You don’t want to be too cheap, and you don’t want to spend too much money if you don’t have too. Make sure that you look into reviews, and you get one that’s not going to break the bank on you.

These are all the things that I would consider when you’re in the market to get a carrier. Keep these in mind, and see which one will work for your pet when you head to the airport next time.

Volaris Airlines - A New Airline For Mexico

Mexico is getting a new airline and if the carrier meets all expectations it will go a long way in helping Mexican air traffic double over just the next three years. Volaris Airlines, started by Mexican billionaires Carlos Slim and Emilio Azcarraga, is expecting to take its first flight on March 13, 2006. Volaris may impact the airline industry well beyond Mexico especially if its aggressive expansion plans work out.

With the Mexican government in the process of divesting its interest in two airlines, Aero Mexico and Mexicana Airlines, start up carriers are poised to jump in and provide service as fares drop and demand surges. Up to now, the highly controlled Mexican airline industry has put a damper on customer demand as artificially high prices and a restricted market have kept customers away. Volaris Airlines, along with competing start up airline, Interjet, are expected to quickly reshape the Mexican airline industry beginning this year.

Volaris is planning to serve at least six Mexican cities and eventually provide service between Mexican and U.S. destinations. No word how all of this will impact wannabe start up Mexus Airlines, currently operating as a “paper carrier” with no concrete plans [or funding] to start flying.

Volaris plans on flying 16 A319 aircraft and has an option on 40 A320 aircraft. TACA International Airlines, based in El Salvador, will hold a minority stake in the airline. If all goes well with Volaris, expect the Mexican airline industry to go through a shake up similar to what the U.S. airline industry has experienced.

Can’t Airline Customers Get a Little Love?

My opinion is that the United States long ago became a culture in which burdensome business practices underscore a stark, uncaring, cavalier attitude toward our citizens. Today’s news brings, yet again, a call for Federal legislation that prevents airline passengers from being stuck inside planes for more than three hours on the tarmac. This is in reaction to a Continental Express flight (2816) which kept its customers on board for six hours. Instead of moving quickly to give their customers a little love, Continental first pointed its finger to Express Jet Airlines. Express Jet Airlines pointed its finger, in turn, to the Rochester airport.

Finger pointing to wiggle out of responsibility for treating customers decently has long been a theme in American businesses. We’ve been through the “trapped on the tarmac” routine before - two years ago the hue and cry for Federal legislation arose when passengers on a JetBlue flight waited an interminable eleven hours on the ground at JFK. Two years later, it’s happened again for a long enough period of time to get media exposure.

Frankly, if businesses would decide to take responsibility for treating customers with care, politeness, and concern there wouldn’t be such pressure to legislate things like how long passengers must sit on a plane before the business that took their money treated them like humans instead of cogs in a machine. Lest I be thought of as coming down too heavy on businesses, however, let me quickly point out that our government engages in the same reactive posturing. Also in today’s news? A call for “tighter airspace rules” around New York City after a small plane crashed into a helicopter carrying Italian tourists. The story created yet another merry-go-round of opinions and finger-pointing.

I’ve come to call the onerous and unloving treatment of American consumers “citizen burden.” We routinely display dismissive attitudes toward our own citizens, acting as if their money and their taxes buy them the barest minimum of tolerance. Long lines at driver license renewal? No eye contact in retail stores? Operators who get snarly when someone asks them to please look again for the number of the nursing home their mom has been sent to three states away? These are so common as to fall totally under the radar of news-worthy.

We may say we believe in the Golden Rule - we may teach it in our schools and churches. But when it comes to putting it into action, we fall as fast as that helicopter hit the Hudson River. Seems to me that whoever the big boss man at Continental is (or Continental Express, if you insist on still pointing the finger) might take on an attitude of constant awareness, unfailing politeness, deep concern, and - yes - even gratitude for each and every passenger that pays for a ticket. We seem to have gained an awful ability to hide behind corporate structure and point fingers, as human beings suffer while sitting on planes or standing on line in government buildings. This is not the attitude or behavior that fosters good will, understanding, or peace in our culture, much less elsewhere in the world.

We are called to compassion and love for our fellow beings. We are called to care for our neighbors as ourselves. We are called by our Constitution and our laws to treat each citizen with respect. We have an opportunity to right wrongs right here in our own country, to open our hearts and give a little love. Perhaps if we did that, we would not find it so difficult to take that model of behavior outside our borders into the rest of the world.

Preparing Airline Reservation KPI

Gone are the days when you would have to physically visit or call an airline company just to make ticket reservations. This is because with the many technological advancements that have come to exist, the system has improved considerably. If you want to make ticket reservations for a certain business trip or a holiday trip with your family, all you have to do is go online and book these flight reservations. Pretty easy, right? However, this convenient system would not be in existence without the implementation of airline reservation KPI or airline reservation key performance indicators.

It would not be surprising to find key performance indicators in the business setting. However, you just might be surprised to know that these are also needed in the airline industry. Simply put, key performance indicators would not really be out of place in the airline industry. This is because these indicators exist to measure the present state of any company in any industry against the goals and objectives that have been set during its foundation. Similarly, there would then be a need to implement KPIs for airline reservation.

In its simplest form, the scorecard would have quantifiable measures, known as metrics, that would determine the present state of a company against goals and objectives that have been set during the foundation and the early years of the company itself. Now, there are a lot of measures that you can include the scorecard, and it would even seem sensible to do this so as to make the scorecard all encompassing. However, this should not be the case at all, since the presence of many indicators would just make the whole measurement process more complicated. With many indicators, it would also be difficult to interpret and represent all these measures in a coherent manner. Thus, it would be wiser to just stick with a few metrics and KPIs at hand.

For the most part, and just like in any business or industry, these KPIs would actually be grouped according to function and need. The following categories would make great additions to your airline reservation scorecard: the financial perspective, the customer perspective, and the internal perspective. There is still a need to group these metrics so that the proper direction and assessment of the measures would be implemented.

A metric that should be included in the financial perspective is the compensation of ticket agents. Now, airline reservations can indeed be done online, so there should not be any need to hire ticket agents, right? Wrong. Ticket agents should still be hired, to oversee the whole process. You would not want to issue or reserve duplicate tickets for your customers now, would you? This would just result to customer dissatisfaction.

As for the customer perspective, the charges for seat preferences would make a good metric. There are some passengers who do prefer certain seats, and they are typically charged for this service. This metric should be included to measure the satisfaction that comes with this service. Ticketing errors should be a metric included for internal perspective. Errors should understandably be measured so that these would be minimized in the long run.

These are just some of the airline reservation KPI that should be included on your scorecard. With these supporting your airline company, success would be the next logical step.
